This graph shows your electricity usage to help you track and manage seasonal trends. The ‘Read Dates’ along the bottom of the graph indicates the month when your meter reading was captured. The number indicated along the left side of the graph tells you the total amount of electricity consumption in kWhs you used in that billing period.

With tiered pricing, customers pay one set rate for the electricity they consume up to a predetermined kilowatt-hour (kWh) called a “threshold’’ each month. Once customers exceed the threshold, they are billed at a higher rate per kWh for all additional electricity consumed in that billing period. Tiered rates and thresholds are different for residential and small business customers.

In the winter period, the Tier threshold for residential customers is higher, so that households can use more power at the lower price. In the summer period, the Tier threshold for residential customers is lower. The Tier threshold for small business customers is the same all year round.

Winter threshold
November 1 to April 30

  • Residential: 1,000 kWh per billing period
  • Small Business: 750 kWh per billing period

Summer threshold
May 1 to October 31

  • Residential: 600 kWh per billing period
  • Small Business: 750 kWh per billing period

The delivery charge covers the costs of delivering electricity from generating stations across the province to your home or business through high voltage (transmission) and low voltage (distribution) power lines. It includes the costs to build and maintain transmission and distribution lines, towers and poles and to operate provincial and local electricity systems. A portion of these charges are fixed and do not change from month to month. The rest are variable and increase or decrease depending on the amount of electricity that you use. The delivery charge also includes the costs of the electricity lost when it is distributed. It is normal for a small amount of power to be lost as it travels over power lines.

The Regulatory charge reflects the cost of administering the wholesale electricity system and maintaining the reliability of the provincial grid.

HST: Charges on the bill are subject to the Harmonized Sales Tax (HST).

Ontario Electricity Rebate (OER): The Government of Ontario introduced the Ontario Electricity Rebate (OER) under the Ontario Rebate for Electricity Consumers Act, 2016. The OER provides eligible customers with a rebate on their electricity bill.
