Gemmell Substation

Greater Sudbury Hydro is committed to continually modernizing and upgrading the local distribution system to better serve you, our customer. As part of our Distribution System Plan Capital program, this construction season we will be upgrading the 53-year old Gemmell T1 Substation, located on the corner of Gemmell Street and Barrydowne Road.

We will be installing a new transformer to double the capacity, adding new controls to enable more remote operations now and in the future, and while the new substation will look similar to what is currently in place, the footprint will be enlarged to adhere to modern standards and clearance requirements. We will also replace overhead powerlines along Gemmell St. (from Barrydowne to Attlee) and Attlee Ave. (from Gemmell to the train tracks). These upgrades will improve the reliability and resilience of the distribution system in the New Sudbury area fed from Gemmell T1.

Work on this project was delayed by COVID-19, however we still expect this project to be completed this construction season before December 31, 2020.
